IDS vs IPS: what is the difference?
In short: An intrusion detection system copies traffic, looks for attacks and raises alerts without affecting the network. An intrusion prevention system sits inline and can drop malicious traffic in real time, at the risk of blocking legitimate traffic if tuned badly.
IDS vs IPS in one sentence
An IDS spots suspicious traffic and alerts you, while an IPS spots it and actively blocks it.
Side-by-side comparison
| Feature | IDS | IPS |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Out of band (copy of traffic via SPAN/tap) | Inline (traffic passes through it) |
| Action | Alerts and logs | Blocks, drops or resets, plus alerts |
| Effect of a false positive | An unnecessary alert | Legitimate traffic blocked |
| Effect if it fails | Network keeps working | Can stop traffic unless it fails open |
| Latency | None added | Small amount added |
| Where you find it today | Network monitoring (NDR) feeding a SIEM | Built into next-generation firewalls |
What is IDS?
An intrusion detection system analyses a copy of network traffic using signatures (known attack patterns) and anomaly detection (unusual behaviour). It is safe to deploy because it cannot break anything, but someone must read and act on its alerts.
What is IPS?
An intrusion prevention system uses the same detection methods but sits in the path of the traffic, so it can drop malicious packets before they reach the target. Most next-generation firewalls include IPS features.
Which one should you use?
Many organisations use both: IPS on the firewall at the internet edge to block known attacks automatically, and IDS-style monitoring inside the network for visibility. A good approach is to start a new IPS in detection-only mode, tune out false positives, then switch on blocking.
Common mistakes and myths
- Turning on every IPS signature in blocking mode on day one and breaking business apps.
- Deploying an IDS that nobody monitors.
- Thinking IPS replaces patching. It buys time; it does not fix the flaw.

Key takeaways
- IDS detects and alerts; IPS detects and blocks.
- IPS is inline; IDS works on a copy of traffic.
- Tune in detection mode before enabling blocking.
- Most NGFWs include IPS.
