Studying while working full time: a routine that actually lasts
Long shifts, family and a course to finish. A simple, realistic routine for working people who are studying IT on the side.
Many people learning networking and security already have a full-time job. Motivation comes and goes, so the answer is a routine small enough to survive a bad week.
Pick a fixed, short slot
Choose the same 30 to 60 minutes every day: before work, on a lunch break or after dinner. Protect it like a meeting. On difficult days, do just 10 minutes so the habit doesn't break.
Use a weekly rhythm
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Mon, Tue | Read one new note or chapter |
| Wed, Thu | Lab or practise what you read |
| Fri | Quiz yourself or try a challenge |
| Weekend | One longer session, plus rest |
Learn from your own job
Every ticket is a lesson. When something breaks at work, write down what happened and look it up later. Real problems stick in memory far better than textbook examples.
Make progress visible
Keep a simple log: date, topic, minutes. After a month, looking back at 20 short sessions is surprisingly motivating, and it shows you which topics need another pass.
Remember: rest is part of the plan. A tired brain doesn't remember subnet masks. Sleep counts as study time.
