Hex and ASCII

Computers store text as numbers. ASCII gives each English letter, digit and symbol a number from 0 to 127, and hexadecimal is a compact way to write those numbers: A is 65, or 41 in hex. Packet captures, memory dumps and many protocols show data as hex bytes.

This tool uses UTF-8, which matches ASCII for plain English characters and uses 2 to 4 bytes for other characters such as é or emoji. When converting hex to text, the ASCII view shows a dot for any byte that isn't a printable character.
