What 6G may bring and when
In short: 6G is still being defined. The ITU has published a framework called IMT-2030, and 3GPP has begun studies that will lead to specifications. Research themes include AI built into the network, sensing using radio signals, satellite integration and new spectrum. Expect gradual evolution from 5G rather than an overnight change.
Where 6G stands
6G is the working name for the generation after 5G. Unlike 5G, it is not yet a finished standard. The process follows a familiar path: the ITU sets a vision and requirements, industry and universities research technologies, and 3GPP turns them into specifications in numbered releases. Industry roadmaps commonly aim for first commercial 6G services around the end of this decade, but timelines and details may change, so treat any date as a plan rather than a fact.
The IMT-2030 vision
The ITU framework for IMT-2030 extends the three 5G scenarios and adds new ones.
- Immersive communication: extended reality (XR) and richer media, building on eMBB.
- Hyper-reliable and low-latency communication: building on URLLC for critical control.
- Massive communication: building on mMTC for dense device populations.
- Ubiquitous connectivity: coverage for places poorly served today, including through satellites.
- AI and communication: networks that support and use AI.
- Integrated sensing and communication: using radio signals to detect objects and movement as well as carry data.
Technologies under research
| Theme | Idea | Status today |
|---|---|---|
| New spectrum | Additional mid-band capacity, and research into much higher frequencies | Under study; regulators decide allocations |
| AI-native networks | AI used throughout radio and core operations | Early AI features already appear in 5G-Advanced |
| Non-terrestrial networks (NTN) | Satellites and high-altitude platforms integrated with mobile networks | Initial support already added to 5G specifications |
| Integrated sensing | Network acts like a radar for positioning and detection | Research and early studies |
| Energy efficiency | Lower power per bit and smarter sleep modes | A design goal across proposals |
Notice that several "6G" ideas are already starting in 5G-Advanced, the later 5G releases. That is normal: generations overlap and evolve.
Security themes to watch
- Post-quantum cryptography: long-lived networks will need algorithms that resist future quantum computers; see post-quantum cryptography.
- AI security: if AI controls network functions, its models and data become targets, raising the issues in adversarial machine learning.
- Privacy of sensing: a network that can sense movement could reveal where people are, so privacy rules and controls need to be designed in.
- Bigger attack surface: satellites, more vendors and more software mean more interfaces to secure.
Tip: be wary of articles that quote precise 6G speeds or launch dates. Ask whether the figure is an ITU requirement, a research demo or marketing.
